Who is Mal Whitfield
Mal Whitfield - Born Malvin Greston Whitfield in Bay City, Texas in 1924. His early challenge set the stage for his overcoming all future challenges. At a very early age both his mother and father passed away, leaving Mal an orphan. Appearing before a court in Los Angeles, his sister Elizabeth stepped in to be his guardian. She was awarded custody by a judge who years later heard of Mal Whitfield's Olympic exploits, and took the time to visit their home to congratulate them. According to Mal, the judge said, "I saw something special here and I knew I did the right thing."

In 1932 young Mal Whitfield realized he had a burning desire to compete on the world stage.

Carrying the Torch / The First 100 Years

The Whitfield Foundation, headed by U.S. Olympic Champion, Mal Whitfield, and following the publication of his new book, "Beyond the Finish Line," is pleased to announce a celebration of the "first 100 years" (1904-2004) of Black athletes' participation in the modern Olympic Games. In conjunction with IOKTS Productions, we have produced "CARRYING THE TORCH," an 18-months educational calendar that exhibits the pioneers, record-breakers and trendsetting Olympic athletes beginning from the year 1904 to this years' Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.

This calendar is the first of its kind that features such well known Olympians as Jesse Owens, Eddie Tolan, Ralph Metcalfe, Marion Jones, Wilma Rudolph and other famous athletes. Also featured are relatively unknown Olympians such a George Poage, John Taylor Baxtor, DeHart Hubbard, Jose Andrade and many more accomplished athletes. The photo images contained in the calendar are frameable and includes detailed biographies, Olympic facts, and daily important contributions highlighting significant dates in history on these magnificent athletes.

Beyond the Finish Line

"Beyond the Finish Line": The remarkable story of
Mal Whitfield as he criss-crosses North, Central, West, East,
and Southern Africa, promoting American sportsmanship. Each
experience weaves an intriguing tapestry of government spies,
corruption, racism, political maneuvering, and tribal infighting as
Whitfield struggled to develop winning athletes.

Victoria Price  Author/Journalist

Mal Whitfield's book, "Beyond the Finish Line" is the story about an inspired American whose determination to compete was so great that he trained even as a tailgunner on icy airstrips in South Korea with a .45 caliber pistol strapped to his side. The book also provides insight into his mastery of human relationships.
